Rear Extension And Courtyard Shaped By The Sun. Rather than extending the ground floor plan ad nauseam into the small rear garden,
it was decided to leave a small square courtyard to the west. This serves the many purposes of bringing light and fresh air to both the play room and the kitchen/dining link, while generating a little controlled play yard and allowing an essential double-aspect to the living space. The roofs are sharply angled down at the junction between the living room spanning the whole back garden precisely to grab the full path of the rising and setting sun and to allow the earliest east light into the kitchen through 45° glazing.
